Renting an electric van with a B driving licence? These are the new rules
As of July 1, 2025, it will be permitted to drive zero-emission commercial vehicles with a maximum authorized mass between 3,501 and 4,250 kg in the Netherlands with a B driver's license. This possibility stems from a national agreement between the government and the mobility sector. This makes it easier for drivers to drive emission-free without requiring a C driver's license.
At DIKS, this applies to our Mercedes electric box truck. Each vehicle has an instruction card with the most important vehicle and safety information. When this card is present, renters with a B driver's license can safely use these electric delivery vans in accordance with the agreements in the covenant.
The conditions for driving an electric commercial van (3,501–4,250 kg)
To be allowed to drive an electric van in this weight class with a B driver's license, the following conditions apply:
You have held a B driving licence for at least 2 years.
The vehicle is fully electric (environmental class ZE or alternative drive).
The vehicle may not be used in combination with a trailer.
Fully electric vans are exempt from the tachograph requirement as long as you drive within the Netherlands and do not travel more than 100 kilometers from your place of business.
Please note: Vehicles in this weight class are not permitted to travel abroad.
Traffic rules for vehicles over 3,500 kg
Because the vehicle has a maximum permissible mass of more than 3,500 kg, it is formally classified as a truck. This means that specific traffic rules apply:
On highways with three or more lanes, you may only use the two right-hand lanes.
The speed limit is 80 km/h.
Overtaking is prohibited when there is a no-overtaking zone for freight traffic.
Roads with a ban on truck overtaking are not allowed.
Target group lanes designated for trucks must be followed.
Other vehicles in this weight class, such as motorhomes, heavy passenger cars, and vans, are also subject to these regulations if their maximum authorized mass exceeds 3,500 kg.
Recommendation for frequent drivers
Although the covenant does not prescribe mandatory road safety training, it may be useful for drivers who regularly drive heavier electric vehicles to take an additional course. Such training provides more insight into safe driving behavior, energy conservation, and the specific driving behavior of electric vehicles.
